The entire sculptural form is composed using a walking cane—a caregiving aid—and artificial flowers, and is covered with false eyelashes, bringing into dialogue care practices that have been passed down in Japan over generations with contemporary sensibilities of adornment. Grounded in the artist’s own experience of providing in-home care for her grandmother, the overlapping of disparate materials symbolically expresses the burdens of caregiving, the accumulation of time, and the experiences of young carers who are easily overlooked by institutional systems. Here, false eyelashes are re-positioned not as adornments that respond to the gaze of others, but as small rituals that help sustain the self. Through material and embodied expression, the work reconstructs the often-invisible sensations of care and quietly reconsiders the relationship between care, adornment, and social norms.
